NAG Applauds the Launching
of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy
The National Accountability Group congratulates
the Anti-Corruption Commission’s Prevention Department
for successfully launching on Tuesday the 15th of February
the National Anti-Corruption Strategy. NAG encourages
the Government of Sierra Leone to take the recommendations
seriously and to implement them without delay. This
ambitious program to root out the opportunities for
corruption within public institutions has taken nearly
a year to complete with the diligent efforts of the
Anti-Corruption Strategy Secretariat, and strikes at
the heart of the pervasive problem in Sierra Leone.
The Secretariat made a concerted effort
to integrate widespread public support and input into
the publication, and the tremendous amount of work involved
is apparent in the comprehensive nature and depth of
the document. The National Accountability Group, one
of the interested stakeholders that participated in
the development of the Strategy, lauds the launching
as a watershed in the country when the government has
no choice but to take reform seriously.
At the formal launching ceremony held at the British
Council, President Kabbah expressed his full commitment
to carrying out the prescriptions set within the National
Anti-Corruption Strategy, emphasizing that to be carried
out successfully it “must have the full backing
of political leadership, which my Government is committed
to providing.”
The National Accountability Group wholly
embraces this sentiment, applauding his commitment,
and vowing to play an active role in monitoring and
supporting the implementation of the Strategy. NAG therefore
demands that the government fulfill its promise to carry
out the document’s recommendations through the
proper allocation of resources and necessary political
support, so as to facilitate an atmosphere of good governance
which is so critical to the political, economic, and
social development of this country.
In addition, NAG stresses the importance
of civil society involvement and media coverage in overseeing
the activities of the government in implementing the
Strategy’s recommended reforms so as to provide
a degree of accountability and exert an amount of pressure
to ensure the promised political backing of the government
leadership.
